"Join the army, they said!"

Everything was going so well. It was the dwarves constructing the road out of the swamp who first started filing the reports that caught my attention. While on his way to design a segment of the road, Leperfish claimed to have seen one of the fortress' many cats acting strangely near the front entrance. Upon investigation of the cat's odd behavior, he was surprised to see a kobold spring out of the shadows and begin running away.

One report of a kobold wouldn't have been that bothersome, but when I started intercepting reports of kobolds and elves all about the entrance to the fortress, I became alarmed. Honestly, if it weren't for all the cats, I think they might have made it in.

Still, the miscreants were all being spotted and would subsequently run away, so there was nothing to be concerned about there. Under the stack of unsuccessful thief and child-snatcher reports, however...

I don't think that manipulating paperwork is going to suffice this time. We're going to need to reinstate that army immediately.

Hey guys, why are we closing the gates on all those migrants? Looks like a whole lot of lumberjacks and militia. Whoa, must be a cat lady in the groups! Look at all the kitties! Wait those kitties are awfully big...

That human is listed as a "recruit" because, unlike most ambush/army members, he is an actual member of world generation with actual carry-over skills. He probably has weapons and armor. The Arrogant Ones have many slaves.

The Zephyr of Pondering, a high elf civilization, is our greatest foe. "The Horn of Galleries" is one of their groups. The Arrogant Ones, like some goblins, are known to kidnap children of other races. Except in their case, they "enlighten" the captured youth and train them in their ways, rather than simply throwing the prisoners into the general population and seeing if they survive, as some goblins have been known to do. This practice has led to the Arrogant Ones accruing large armies of humanoids from other races. These individuals claim to be serving willingly, but in a practical sense, they are slaves to their High Elf masters.

Overheard in the conversations of Potato Jones Dorenlogem ...

Hiding? No, no, no. This is ... preemptive fortification! We don't have a clear leader anymore but I was granted reprieve from my duty on the ramparts by Boing herself. And if it wasn't actually Boing, say the ruling came from my own mouth, who's to judge? I am certainly not fit for the militia and-WHERE ARE YOU GOING?

Swear to me, by your beard, that you won't tell anyone.

Good. Now shut the door.
